Introduction

Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire Authority serves a population of more than 750,000 in the South East of England, including the rapidly growing area of Milton Keynes. The region encompasses major motorways, rail lines, and significant landmarks, making it a critical area for fire and rescue services. To enhance their operational efficiency and ensure the safety of homes and businesses, the Fire Authority required a robust Premises Risk Management System (PRMS).

The Challenge

The Fire Authority faced several challenges that necessitated the implementation of a new PRMS:

  • Administrative Efficiency: There was a need to reduce administrative activities, automate processes wherever possible, and introduce more agile ways of working, including the use of mobile technology.
  • System Obsolescence: Existing systems were becoming less fit for purpose, with modifications either not technically desirable, not possible, or not economically viable.
  • Technological Advancement: There was a need to improve, advance, and standardise the technology deployed to create options for sharing services, systems, or technology platforms with third parties or other Fire Service organisations in the future.

The Solution

To address these challenges, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire Authority partnered with Microsoft Dynamics and Active Informatics to develop a comprehensive PRMS. This system was designed to record and manage risk information for both addressable and non-addressable locations across the region, ensuring that firefighters arrive at the scene with all relevant risk information. Key features of the solution included:

  • Prevention / Safe and Well Visits: The system facilitated the recording and management of data related to prevention activities and safe and well visits.
  • Site Specific Risk Information (SSRI): It included capabilities for site-specific risk audits and the management of site-specific risk information.
  • Protection / Business Safety: The system supported business safety operations, ensuring that commercial properties were adequately protected.

The Results

The implementation of the PRMS brought several benefits to the Fire Authority:

  • Enhanced Operational Efficiency: The system reduced administrative burdens and automated processes, allowing firefighters to focus more on their core responsibilities.
  • Improved Data Management: The PRMS provided a centralised platform for recording, viewing, and managing risk information, ensuring that all relevant data was easily accessible.
  • Future-Proof Technology: The standardised technology platform created opportunities for future collaboration and service sharing with other organisations.

By leveraging Microsoft Dynamics and Active Informatics, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire Authority significantly improved their ability to manage risks, respond to emergencies, and protect the community. This successful implementation highlights the importance of advanced technology in enhancing public safety and operational efficiency.
